When you’re in the throes of hay season, it can be easy to keep your nose to the grindstone and neglect everyday farm equipment maintenance.

This is a mistake, because even when you’re running quality John Deere products, hay production is hard work that can take its toll on equipment if you’re not careful.

Making hay equipment maintenance part of your daily routine can save you time and even money down the road. Be sure to check the following on your mowers, rakes and balers, respectively, often throughout hay season.

  • Check all safety items (lights, guards, etc.) to ensure everything is in working order each day
  • Review hoses for any leaks that may have occurred since last use
  • Adjust tire pressure as needed
  • Double-check hitch connections
  • Adjust any settings as needed
  • Replace or repair any parts that may have come loose since last use, like pickup teeth
  • Be sure a fire extinguisher is always handy

When finished for the day, don’t underestimate the power of cleaning your hay equipment, and give it one last once-over before storing it for the night. This is a great time to catch any belts or pins that may have come loose while they’re still on your mind. Ridding your hay equipment of debris regularly can help maximize its performance over time and potentially even increase resale value.
