Outdoor Safety Reminders

posted on Thursday, April 27, 2017 in Tips & Safety

As we start spending more and more time outdoors, it occurred to us that it would be a great time to think about some ways of staying safe this Spring and Summer. Yes, we’re a John Deere dealer in Missouri, so yes we will first think of safety in regards to lawn maintenance, but we also found some other tidbits of outdoor safety that we thought we could share with you all.

Mowing Safety

  • Wear safety glasses, sturdy shoes, and long pants.
  • Protect your hearing with ear plugs or noise canceling radio headphones.
  • If push mowing, do not pull the mower backward or if on a riding mower, do not mow in reverse unless necessary.
  • Keep children out of the yard while mowing AND
  • Do not allow children to ride as passengers on rideon mowers.
  • Drive up and down slopes, not across them…this helps to prevent rollovers.
  • Need to refuel? Make sure the engine is off and cool.

Sun Safety

  • To reduce the risk of sunburn wear sunblock or sunscreen and/or long sleeve and a wide brimmed hat.
  • As the outdoor temps begin to rise be sure to drink plenty of liquids.

BUGS!

  • Use appropriate insect repellent!
  • Cover up with long sleeves, pants, and socks to help prevent bites.

BBQ Grilling

  • Wash hands, utensils, and surfaces that have touched raw meats as soon as possible!
  • Leave sufficient space between the grill and the building.

Adventures

  • Whether you are going for a hike, taking the Gator down a trail, or headed fishing…it is important to let a friend or family member know where you are headed and what time you plan to return.
