Tips & Safety
The versatility of compact utility tractors by John Deere is unmatched. A small tractor can be used for mowing, gardening and a litany of other tasks. This also means that compact tractors can experience wear and tear from one season to the next.
When we say “small tractor,” we’re referring to John Deere 1 Series sub-compact tractors as well as 2 Series, 3 Series and 4 Series compact tractors. Ensuring your sub-compact or compact tractor is properly maintained can save you both time and money in the long run.

Below you’ll find some valuable tips on when it’s time to start this spring’s tractor maintenance routine.
1. Don’t Neglect Spring Cleaning
Even if your tractor is used regularly all year long, an old-fashioned spring cleaning is always a great idea. Take steps to rid your machine of dirt, grime and build-up that may have accumulated over the winter months. This will help protect against rust and corrosion.
Be sure that every area of your small tractor, from the headlights to underneath the machine, gets enough attention. A clean tractor will also allow you to spot necessary repairs more easily.
2. Perform a Visual Inspection
Once your small tractor is squeaky clean, perform a thorough visual inspection to determine if any parts are loose or damaged. Keep your eyes peeled for loose nuts, bolts or screws, and repair those issues accordingly.
Be sure any electrical elements are connected tightly and properly. During your visual inspection, take special care to notice any oil leaks or cracks in your small tractor’s parts.
3. Check the Basics
Inspect tires for signs of wear and to ensure the air pressure is correct. Accurate air pressure is vital to overall tractor performance. When air pressure is not at the proper level, fuel economy can be negatively impacted as well.
Other items, like transmission fluid, mechanical joints, belts, radiator screens, fuel filters, oil filters, brakes, safety switches, hazard lights, etc., should also be reviewed to ensure they are in working order.
As you complete the steps above, you’re bound to discover items that need to be repaired or replaced.
